As promised I´m taking a break from putting the finishing touches on my YayaHan and Kiana Tom posts for a little belated farewell tour to my old homestead. And I´m saying belated because it´s been almost a week since I left the cold hills and valleys of Germany to move to greener pastures.
But with all the problems connected to selling a comicbook collection you have accumulated for almost 40 years - plus getting rid of everything else I owned like books, music CDs, music cassettes, BlueRays, DVDs, old VHS tapes, posters, magazines, comic magazines, movie magazines, adult magazines, trading cards, furniture, clothes, stuff etc it´s been a real whirlwind of event that didn´t leave me much time to write new posts.
Not to mention the trip to Spain which was an adventure in and of itself. And the whole Covid 19 thing didn´t exactly make things easier either.
Speaking of my unavoidable trip to Spain - which I suppose will be the last time I relocate to a new country at my age - I usually don´t like to make promotion on my blog except for pimping some comicbooks or comicbook conventions. But I have to give a big shoutout to VUELING without which our flight would not have been as pleasant as it was. I mean, just leaving everything you own behind to start from zilch is traumatic enough but it could have been much worse if the staff of VUELING had not been so accommodating. Now one aspect that the trip to Spain was not as taxing as previous ones was that the plane was not as packed as usual due to the Corona virus. But not only was the flight personnel very forthcoming and helpful but without them we never would have managed to board the plane on time. What´s more, even though we hadn´t solicited special help for discapacitated people ( because on their website it said that you could only apply for that if you are in a wheelchair ) they included us in a small group that had. And they not only carried us all the way to the luggage pick up, they also made sure we got through customs and the health inspection without any problems. Plus they picked up our luggage and accompanied us all the way to the taxi stand. Now the taxi we took first went the wrong way so the fare was quite high but apart from that it was not such a grueling torture like on previous occassions. The only thing I regret is that I didn´t apply for the help for handicapped people before because brother, that´s the only way to travel - for old people like me.
Staying on the topic of the kindness of strangers, I have to give another big shoutout to the nice guys who bought my comics, movie magazines and old issues of PLAYBOY and other adult magazines. Without them I would have had to throw away much more stuff than I did ( which were for the most part spanish comicbooks but also a lot of vintage issues of PLAYBOY from the 1980s and all of my issues of Tomorrow Publishing´s MODERN MASTERS which was especially harrowing ) even if I had to sell them at way less than what they were worth. Or at least less than I paid for them. I knew from the start that E - Bay was not the best option ( after I found out that all the german comicbook message boards that included sections where comicbook afficionados sold and bought their comicbooks had closed up shop ) since it takes a long time and you have to sell at the lowest prices. Plus the people who buy stuff there only are familiar with the comicbooks through the movie adaptions so you have to ask a lot of questions like if they only read german comicbooks or if they also read american comicbooks etc. But things really hit a roadblock when the person who was supposed to help me put the comicbooks on E - Bay decided to put the time needed for it to better use and left me hanging.
So first up I want to thank the kind person who relieved me of all my omnibus hardbacks ( I wish I could have kept at least the IRON MAN BY BOB LAYTON AND DAVID MICHELINE OMNIBUS HARDCOVER and the SECRET WARS II OMNIBUS HARDCOVER, not only because the first one is the best run on IRON MAN ever and the second one is my favorite crossover ever, but you can´t get the first one at a reasonable price anymore since the MCU movies and the second one is out of print so you can´t get it period ), absolute editions, artist editions ( thankfully I managed to hold onto my JOHN BYRNE ARTIFACT EDITION and MIKE ZECK ARTIST EDITION ) selected hardcovers and some special floppies. I don´t want to put his name on the blog without consent but he gave me the best price on these which goes a long way to ease the pain of selling all my children.
The next one I guess I have to chalk up to karma. Longtime followers of the blog may remember that before I got too busy with all the life stuff I used to give away most of my GRATIS COMIC TAG and FREE COMIC BOOK DAY issues for free. My brother always told me that I had to make special competitions and have them do chores like promote comicbooks to get those free issues but I always said that that was not what it was all about and that giving away things for free is its own reward. I always had the feeling that if you give back something good things will happen to you.
Well, as it turns out among all the people I sent those free issues to was somebody who was only interested in DC Comics stuff. And not only did he give a new home to most of my DC Comics issues he also taught me a valuable lesson. I only wish I would have learned this sooner since it might have convinced me to keep my Jim Aparo books and NEW TEEN TITANS omnibus. On the other hand I was lucky to sell as many comics as I did.
Another big Thank You goes to a real trooper who not only bought most of my remaining comicbooks and DVDs at a much higher price than I would have accepted but also was a real trooper and helped me send the few comicbooks I managed to hold on to my new - and at the same time old - home. At the moment I am writing this only two of the four boxes I had sent to Spain have arrived but I am hopeful that the other two boxes will find its way here despite the incompetence of the spanish post office.
Last but not least I owe a debt of honor that can never be repaid to a special friend of the family who went way and beyond no matter if it was about helping me sell my stuff, help us empty the apartment, smooth things over with the new owners, get us plane tickets, send my last box to Spain or provide us with a place to stay while we were waiting for our flight. This guy helped us more than our own family who sadly took the current health crisis as an excuse to leave us in the lurch. It´s a sobering experience when your own family members ignore how much you depend on others to do stuff for you when you are old, handicapped and decrepit but it´s even worse if it happens in your time of need. But I don´t want to dwell on this. We are at our new home away from home - or our new and old home away from our previous home - so I want to concentrate on positive things. Plus I still believe in karma and they made their decision.
Coming to the purpose of this post, blog regulars may remember that I tried to post as much stuff about german comicbooks and Germany in general in my latest posts as possible. Because on one side it´s much to pailful to be reminded of everything that I lost and on the other side I don´t think it makes much sense to write about german comicbooks when I´m not in Germany anymore. So these posts - of which I expect to write a few - are my way of saying " Auf Wiedersehen ! "or better " Lebwohl ! "since I don´t think I will return to Germany. But I have been known to be wrong about things and I also never expected to move back to mi tierra.
And since our last post about the big two was about DC Comics - way back in February - we start things off with the comicbooks from Williams Verlag.
They may not have been the best translated issues and they often had to break up the issues of the series they had as back ups into two parts, plus some of the redrawn covers were an acquired taste - to say the least - but I don´t think there is a conoisseur of Marvel Comics in Germany who has not kept an issue. Because despite its many shortcomings there is an energy and vibe to those issues that can´t be denied. You can feel it was a labor of love for all involved from the translations - some of the german names for the heroes and villains hold some added entertainment value - to the interviews, reader feedback or the rest of the editorial content.
As longtime followers of TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN well know I like to kill two birds with one stone and this post is no exception since a few of the items I selected for this are my way to pay tribute to somebody who has passed away. But we will continue this topic in the bonus section where I will provide more clues to the identity of this person or persons.
