Since I have once again spent the whole night battling with severe health issues I have decided to finally finish the often postponed tribute to Tom Peyer who celebrated his 65th birthday on the 23rd last month. Mea culpa.
I first skipped it for a post about artist Greg Laroque and his contribution to THE LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES and then it got pushed back again for my latest post about Doug Moench´s brilliant series SHANG - CHI, MASTER OF KUNG FU . But Today´s post is about Tom Peyer. His name may not appear on a lot of best comic writers lists but he wrote a lot of books with the Legion of Super - Heroes during what is affectionately - and by some fans not so affectionately - called the Threeboot Legion as well as some of the ancillary titles like L.E.G.I.O.N. 93 or R.E.B.E.L.S. 94 which I enjoyed.
I did a special post for Tom Peyer in 2017 and I still had a lot of covers left from that so making a new post should have been easy as a picknick.
Or so you might think. To add another wrinkle I didn´t want to make it just about one of the many series he wrote so finding the right mix was a bit difficult. And since he worked on the Threeboot Legion and Alan Davis did a lot of the covers I was sorely tempted to do a post mainly with his art but decided against it. Because I have finally enough high quality material for an Alan Davis Legion of Super - Heroes post so I am only going to include one or maybe two original Alan Davis covers in the Tom Peyer post and only pieces where I got a second version of much better quality.
Now we come to the part where the Tom Peyer post almost got finished.
As explained I had all the art selected and I was all set to go BUT it was Oscar night. I´m not sure if I followed the Oscar´s telecast live last year but I remember that it was probably the worst Oscar´s I have seen so far. Last year´s Golden Globes were similarly dreadful but this year´s Golden Globes were not that bad so I decided to give the Oscars another chance.
Initially I thought that I could start posting before the main show and continue during the commercial breaks but they were just too short and I didn´t want to be going from my laptop to the tv and miss the best parts.
Which pushed the Tom Peyer post back another day and when I saw that that day it would have been Greg LaRocque´s birthday anyway I decided the Tom Peyer post was already so late that another few days wouldn´t matter. Plus while I have done a plethora of FLASH FRIDAY posts in the past ( for a long time it used to be a regular feature on the blog which is one of the reasons why I am not including links for all those posts either ) I have only done one FLASH FRIDAY post for Greg Larocque . Although it is about issue 54 Nobody Dies which is arguably the best issue of this run.
To bring this to an end - as you are probably already bored and anxious to get to the part with the Greg LaRocque art - since I had already done a post of one of his most famous runs I wanted to switch things up for this year and do one about the other book he is best known for. And the fact that the book is the LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES did not hurt much either.
The only problem with that was that I did not have enough material for a post about Greg LaRocque´s run on the LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES. I did have around a dozen pages but for a full post I needed a bit more. I found more than enough material online and so I decided to save some of it for special spotlights on Brainiac 5, Dreamgirl and another Legionnaire that I won´t mention because it ties into the mystery surrounding Sensor Girl.
